The learning in
Studio
School will require active engagement from students. Primarily, teachers and adults in the school will lead inquiry. Samples of the types of multi-disciplinary (STEM, Language Arts, Social Studies, ect.) Design and Problem Based Learning cases Studio Students might use to pursue academics follows. These cases were written by MSU teacher candidates in Dr. Susie Burroughs Methods of Teaching Social Studies course after Dr. Burroughs received focused SBL and PBL professional development from the ACHIEVE Mississippi project.
· The state legislature of
Mississippi has just announced their proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year, and the new budget leaves programs such as education and health care without adequate funding. Some small school districts may not be able to operate, and many senior citizens and lower-income families may not have health care if something is not done. The governor has asked the legislature to form a panel of experts to formulate an alternative budget. You and your classmates have been selected to sit on this panel and to explore other options (i.e. raising taxes, cutting funding elsewhere, etc.) that will insure that education and health care are adequately funded.
· DDT is a pesticide that was widely used to eradicate mosquitoes in the
United States in the 1950s. Since that time, it has been banned in the
United States and most countries around the world. Recently, the World Health Organization has been worried about the increasing cases of malaria in Africa,
Asia, and the Pacific. Malaria is a virus carried and transmitted by mosquitoes. The WHO wants to increase spraying of DDT to kill the mosquitoes that carry the virus. You and your classmates are to write a recommendation for the WHO concerning its use.
· You loaned your car to a friend. While driving the car, your friend totaled it. The insurance company paid you $15,000 for your wrecked car and you must purchase a new car. You and your classmates are to select the best possible car with the amount of money you have to spend. · You are the mayor of
Small Town,
USA. Seismologists have gathered data that suggests a possibility that an earthquake might occur in your community during the weekend of a very important civic event. The civic leaders of the town are to decide whether or not they should evacuate the city or go on with the festivities. You and your classmates are asked to present a recommendation for action to the city commissioners as soon as possible.
· The Iraqi people are now free of Saddam Hussein, and the task of building a free and open democratic society now looms large. To this end, the Iraqi Ministry of Education is planning to reopen the schools and to begin an “Education for Democracy” project. You and your classmates have been asked to devise a plan for teaching about democracy. · The school system in
Eubanks
County has 800 acres of timberland. The school board has proposed cutting the timber on the land. You and your classmates have been asked to prepare a report for the school board concerning the pros and cons of their proposal.
