Qualifications of Studio Students have not been firmly established. To date, all families, students, partners and other committee members have conceptualized that
Studio
School will seek students who have the following characteristics:
- Low income marked by free or reduced price lunch,
- Repeated failure and/or promotion/transfer before 12 years of age,
- Repeated in or out of school suspension and/or behavior problems,
- Family members who have not attended college and/or have not completed high school,
- Family members who are currently or chronically unemployed or under employed,
- Have not found success in the regular school setting for whatever reason.
To begin the process of selection, we plan to use the practices currently underway in the
West Point
School District.
West Point has identified sixth grade students with the above listed characteristics for their academic recovery program which is a complementary part of their district-wide drop out prevention plan. All partnering districts will identify all potential Studio Students similarly. Students and families from among all students meeting the above criteria who apply and sign a
Studio
School commitment statement will be placed in a lottery from which 25 students will be selected from each district to total 75. Gender equity will be maintained through a proportional stratified sampling procedure by placing female and male applicants in different lottery pools and a representative male to female ratio will be maintained by selecting a gender representative group of students from each district. For example,
Starkville
School District has approximately 50.72% male enrollment and 49.28% female enrollment, therefore the 25 Studio Students from
Starkville will represent this male to female ratio as closely as is possible. The same process for selection of an ethnically representative sample will be used to maintain equity.
