Teachers begin Studio School preparation

Six teachers from Oktibbeha and Noxubee County Schools participated in four days of professional development activities to prepare for the opening of three Studio School classrooms in spring of 2009. The July development workshop included observation and engagement with teacher candidate students and architecture students who were applying studio-based learning in their classrooms. Teachers participating were Richard Baliko, Reggie Harris, Jackie Hill, and Lateria Joiner from Noxubee County Schools, and Darwin Petras and Pam Roberts from Oktibbeha County Schools. Associate professors Dr. Kay Brocato from Education and Christopher Monson from Architecture led the development workshop. The development work was supported by funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission and the MSU College of Education.

I heard Professor Monson on NPR this morning, and it reminded me about all the hard work you all are putting in to this project for Mississippi’s children. Please, always feel encouraged because I believe this project is a very interesting and promising direction for Mississippi’s educational growth. Keep up the good work!

Hey, thanks for your post Paul! I’m glad that my radio show call in got so much attention . . . any and all public awareness about it is a great thing for the project. Keep coming back here to the website; we’ll keep our progress updated for everyone to see.

Guys,

I really struggle to find the words to express my excitement and enthusiasm regarding this program. As a product of the magnet school system and co-operative education, I can truly say that the “Studio School” approach is perhaps the most effective means of achieving student engagement and retention. Also, it provides students the skill set to perform effectively in the marketplace.

Kudos to the Studio Schools team.
